The spindle is rotated by a small motor. In some drives, the spindle motor is directly attached to the axle of the spindle. In others, the motor rotates a pulley, which has a belt attaching it to the spindle. As the spindle turns, the |data sectors| of the recording media pass by the |read/write head| to be accessed.
